Ideal Site Requirements: medium moisture soil, afternoon shade 

Soil: average, medium, well-drained

Water: Medium

Sunlight needs: Full sun to part shade 

Landscape use: Rain garden, not appropriate as a street tree or for use near homes

Brief Description: Low branched, small tree or large shrub, irregular rounded crown 

Wildlife Benefits: Attracts butterflies and ruby-throated hummingbirds 

Possible Problems: Leaf blotch can be a significant problem. Powdery mildew and anthracnose are also frequent problems. Leaf scorch (brown edges) may occur in full sun in dry climates. Will often defoliate by late August.

Stand out Features: Red flowers in spring at same time as hummingbirds are migrating.
